I love my day off

It's FRIDAY! For Caleb, that means Gym class! For jen that means she is not here by herself with the kids all day! For Lauren, well, it just means, whatever. FOR ME, it means a day off!
This day started in a really cool way, well actually, it was 20 degrees and frosty, so I guess that is cold! Inside our home was a different story. Jen made large, big, huge Cinnamon rolls with lots of icing. We had hot coffee with egg nog creamer! It was so nice to eat as a family and be toasty warm while watching the sun glare off the frost!

At 10 am it was homework time. On friday Caleb gets to share in his K-garten class "share time." The assignment this week was to color this square, put his name on it, cut it out, tape it to a bag and then go on a nature hunt to get at least 3 things. Caleb, being Caleb, couldn't just go out and look, he had to make a list of what he wanted to find. Following the list, we bundled up and headed outdoors. To our surprise, the sun was really warm and it was a beautiful day. Here are some pics of our "Nature Hike".

Following the hike, we decided to shoot some hoops. It was really fun to spend that time together. I am not a prophet, but take notice of this shooter, he may be on a local basketball court near you in a few years!

We then played lots of different games, got kinda muddy (sorry mom) and then came in for a nice warm lunch! Welp, it is almost time for Caleb to go to school, that means "daddy daughter time". I JUST LOVE FRIDAY'S!

VIEW BEYOND THE PEW

Sunday was a "two-sided coin" day. Here is a little of what I mean...
  • We spent all summer burning up in the heat without air and on Sunday it felt really cold without heat.
  • The worship was a wonderful mix of upbeat contemporary with the band rockin' it out and Jared leading two old hymns of the church from the piano.
  • I actually sat with my mom, wife and Judy McConnell IN A PEW while Brad brought a message that challenged, convicted, inspired and humored us all.
  • There seemed to be a positive response to our 2008 Faith Promise pledges for mission support (final numbers will be announced on Sunday) while at the same time we struggled through one of the three lowest offerings of the year to date.
  • We shared worship with nearly 15 first or second time attenders, while at the same time, our total attendance has dropped by nearly 100 people in 4 weeks. Sunday was the second lowest attendance of the year.
  • LJ Dozier went to the Bengals game and THEY LOST! What is up with that?

I hope you don't think I am negative, nothing could be farther from the truth. I know God is doing something amazing at LCC! I know that one Sunday really means NOTHING! I know that many families were on vacation and several were down with sickness. I know that the three prior weeks we celebrated really great offerings. I know that Satan is working on our family, but HE WILL NOT WIN! This post is simply my perspective and I want to keep it real.

It was a wonderful sunday at LCC! My spiritual life has grown because of it. Thanks to Brad for being "BRAD" and helping us to see past our walls! Thanks to everyone who served our kids, worked the children's check-in, served on a care team, prepared communion, made coffee, parked cars, played an instrument, sang in the choir (you guys sounded awesome), served communion/offering, pledged to support missions in 2008, and taught a Sunday school class. YOU ARE ALL APPRECIATED! If you are leaving town this weekend, BE SAFE! If you will be in town, don't miss worship as we begin a new series entitled: "Naughty or Nice".

I LOVE YOU ALL

just a few pics of the NMC

Sorry you missed it! WOW! Please remember to pray for every missionary located around the world including in good ole' America. By the way, aren't all Christians called to be missionaries? Yeah, I thought so! Pray for me and I will pray for you!
One last thing. I have secured the dates for our 2008 mission trip to Louisianna. We will be going to work on homes the week of July 26th. Let me know if you would like to go with us!

NMC

The National Missionary Convention began at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincy last evening. My family will be attending tonight as well as tomorrow afternoon/evening. This is a gathering of missionaries from all over the world for a time of refreshing, renewal and support. It is amazing to hear the stories and to worship side by side with so many special servants of God. If you are near the cincy area and would like to experience a really special treat, "COME ON DOWN". If LCC is your church home, then just let the registration desk know you are from our church and the cost will be $0. If you would like to ride down on Saturday, please contact Jim Julliard at 683-2685. I really hope to see many of you downtown this weekend, you will not be sorry! Just a final reminder, there are nursery, preschool and children's programs as well as a full STUDENT convention for Jr. & Sr. Highers. If you want to learn more, check out the NMC website at www.nationalmissionaryconvention.org Come and support a missionary, while having your socks blessed off!

a valley day

I have been speaking in my messages about having consistent faith on the mountain tops and in the valleys. Well, TODAY WAS A VALLEY!
  • Had breakfast with a good friend and ministry team leader at LCC who shared with me that his family was moving on to another church. It was a good breakfast and I was not totally surprised, but it still stinks. The relationship will not be affected because God is bigger than that, but I will really miss this family.
  • I have been struggling with a growing tooth ache over the past week and this morning the pain spiked. It brought me to tears and the only relief was ice or cold water. I found myself in a dentist chair to learn that the tooth I had just gotten replaced with a cap now has infection behind it and I will need a full root canal tomorrow afternoon and full payment of $750 due at time of procedure. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! We just cut up our credit cards as part of FPU. There goes that emergency fund.
  • I came home from lunch to find out that my kids had been picking at each other and fighting all morning. Jen was at her limit and the day had only just begun.
  • TOOTH PAIN, TOOTH PAIN, TOOTH PAIN! Ugghhhh! I finally got Tylenol with Codeine and it did NOTHING!
  • Caleb had a really bad evening. He had several break downs, he could not obey and then he started hitting on me, so he spent a lot of time in his room and screaming! Lauren has now entered a stage where she does whatever her brother does, so when he screams, guess what she does, you got it, she screams too!

I think I have all the crud out in the open now. Doesn't my day stink? I am in a really stinky valley with no hope, right? NO! Not really! That stuff is just life. When I really think about this day, even as my pain in my mouth cuts like a knife, I realize God is faithful and working. It is all in perspective and what we allow ourselves to dwell on. Here is another perspective of this day:

  • I have a home, a family, money in the bank, all bills paid and my freedom.
  • I have a great church family in which I work, serve and share!
  • E-mailed Kristyn to talk about what it means to be a member of LCC.
  • I have great life-long friends (inside and outside LCC)
  • John Lucas brought me sauerkraut today.
  • I got to talk to Mary Anne about her positive experience at LCC, getting baptized and joining the church.
  • Dan P and I got to work on a really exciting form of shepherding, small groups and community to be implemented sometime soon.
  • Found out our good friends the Constables will be joining our family for Thanksgiving dinner next week.
  • Jen made the most incredible dinner of Parmesan pancakes and bacon.
  • I got to take 2 vicodin this evening.
  • My dentist got me in today and the specialist can get me in tomorrow.
  • My son has the greatest kindergarten teacher in the world.
  • Lauren actually said "I Love You" today.
  • Caleb read about 15 sight words perfectly today.
  • I tucked both of my healthy and happy kids in bed tonight
  • I get to lie down with my sweetheart and sleep with a roof over my head for one more night.

God, forgive me when I get trapped in the valley of life. Thank you that I was able, only by your grace and mercy, see out of the valley through faith. I really feel victory (even though I am in pain) knowing that I am practicing what I preach. I pray for everyone at LCC and anyone who reads this, that all will have "Biggie Sized Faith" consistently through the valleys and mountaintops of life. Don't give up on me God and please help me get past this painful tooth ache. Nothing is impossible with you. Oh yeah, and thank you God for prompting Faith Peel to send this picture, I mean, God sighting, to me today!

rest in peace grandpa

Thanks to everyone for your prayers, kind words and concern for me and my family after the passing of my grandfather last Friday. Some of you have asked, so I wanted to link you to the obituary and the memorial service time and place. Please pray for my mom, Sandy Bell in this difficult time and also for me this Saturday as I lead this service. If anyone needs directions, don't hesitate to call me. Here is the link:

don't mess with daddy

Well, it happened. Jen and I knew it would, but so soon? Let me explain. I came home for lunch to eat with my family on Monday like I do often, however, this day allowed me the opportunity to take Caleb to school. We arrive around 12:20 or so and Caleb saw some of his friends standing at the door, so he wanted to walk on up. This was different for me, see, we used to stay in the car until the teachers came out and he would sit in the front seat and we would talk, but now, well, his friends are out and I have been trumped.

That's not what finally happened

We walked up to the door and in a flash he was gone. This was the first time that I did not get a kiss before got in line. No kiss! Not even a wave goodbye. No thank you. No see you later daddy. Ugghhhhh!

That's not what finally happened

For some reason the teachers were running late and several kids were standing together. I knew they were playing, so I just stood off a distance and talked to another dad. We shared how hard it is to let them grow up and go. It was a bonding experience.

That's not what finally happened

Suddenly, I heard something and looked to see my son with backpack on his back down on the ground. Everyone was laughing, he was laughing and he got up. It was then I realized. A class "bully" was picking on my son! NO! Right in front of me. Oh and did I mention, right in front of his mom who did NOTHING ABOUT IT! Well, what do I do? I watched as this "bully" started to push him again. Over and over, until WHAM, he was down again. AHHHHHHHHH! I did what every dad has to do. I said, "Caleb, please come over here." He said, "nah" and so I was unsure what to do next. Could I allow this kid to push my Caleb? Should I go to his mom and ask her to stop him? Should I go tell the Principal? At last, Caleb ran over and said to me, "what daddy?" I simply said to him, "Caleb, it is not nice when they push you around and make you fall, so next time they do that, don't laugh and make sure you say, PLEASE STOP."

You guessed it, he went back and was greeted by A GANG of Kindergarten bullies. I am not kidding you. They all started to push him around, he was like a ball in a pinball machine. They were all laughing and I could hear his sweet little voice saying: "Stop please, stop please." At this moment, it was like I went into a phone booth and came out with a SUPERDAD cape around my neck. As Popeye was quoted as saying: "that's all I can stanze, I can't stanze no more"

The next moment I was standing over the LEAD GANG MEMBER and giving him a lecture about how he should treat people and why he needed to stop picking on others when they ask and how I wasn't going to stand back there and watch him hurt my son. It was then that a grandma of one of the other kids did step in and make her kids apologize. Where was the "bully mom" you ask? She never moved. She never stepped in. She just blew her little boy a kiss and told him to have a great day. SOMEONE DEFINE PARENT TO ME?

I know that "bullying" will happen. I know that Caleb might even be a big target for it. I expect to hear about it in Elementary school, but KINDERGARTEN?!?!? It finally happen, and it broke my heart!

In closing, I need to let you know that the school got right on it. When his teacher heard about it, she made the kids all apologize. The discipline leader called the house and talked to Jen. They were fair and prompt. Way to be leaders. The truth of the matter is, if a certain "mom" would of been brave and concerned enough to intervene and teach her child, it would of never had to get to the school. I could preach about discipline and parenting, but I have already written enough for tonight. If you think about it, say a little prayer for Caleb and his friends!

VIEW BEYOND THE PEW

My favorite quote in ministry came sunday from one of our church members. His first name is the same as a really cool preacher who writes an article called VIEW BEYOND THE PEW. Anyway, following one of the services, he looked at me and said, "if I was new here, I would think that you were crazy, and i love it!" I told him that he had been new here recently, and he was not only now saved, but an active member of LCC, so obviously, I didn't scare him away and God must like a little "crazy from the pastor" once in a while.

It was just that kind of sunday. Attendance was one of the lowest of the year in the 280's and somewhere, somehow we lost 60+ people from the week before, but the spirit in the place was really great. Thanks to everyone for being willing to get "fired up" about the things we know as truth. I had just come off of two weeks out of the pulpit and a couple retreats along with a family vacation so I was "off the charts". It was great to be fresh and rested. From the looks on your faces and the nods of agreement, I think we hit the mark with this new series entitled: "Biggie Sized Faith". If you didn't make it last Sunday, make sure to catch sermon #2 on Sunday, I think it will be the most encouraging one of the entire series. There were a few struggles with technology, tardy teachers and long-winded preachers on Sunday, it was just one of those days. LJ did a fantastic job on a really tough subject and everyone responded very positively. PTL we had our second week of $6000+ offerings. Finally, several of us went to Mt. Healthy Christian Home to do a service for the residents. It was so nice to share with our former minister RW Baynes as well as to share time with those awesome men and women of faith, not to mention the piano led HYMNS were a special treat. It was just one of those days. About the only normal thing on Sunday was that THE BENGALS LOST!
